5 Steps to Becoming a Mermaid

Posted by Peter Buijs on

We’ve all thought about it. Even those who aren’t particularly into swimming or beaches have thought about it one time or another. For most it’s just a fleeting moment of whimsy to get a chuckle, but for others it would be a dream to become this beautiful, mythical creature! While you’ll never literally turn into a mermaid, there’s no reason you can’t channel your inner-siren, especially this Halloween. The easiest and most evident step is by sporting a very mermaid hairstyle, but you’d be surprised to know there are other ways!

Dye Your Hair

Now the mermaids in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean may have the same natural hair colour we see on dry land, but why not make your ‘mermaidness’ more evident by choosing a different colour? One option is to go for sea-themed colours, like teal and blue tones, or you can go with pastel hues like lavender, purple, and light pink. Even better, you can go with a combination of these colours in strips or ombre. You may need the help of a professional hairstylist, but the end result will be so worth it!

Learn to Swim

Obviously. Mermaids swim differently from the way us mere mortals swim (not that these are facts – insert tear here – but logically with fins you’d be swimming diffierently), but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to hold your head up in the water. Besides, swimming lessons is also extremely important for survival reasons. You never know when being able to swim can save your or someone else’s life.

Mermaid Academy

In several parts of the world, such as in the UK and the Philippines, Mermaid Lessons are now being offered. They’re literally lessons on how to swim with a tail on – usually including cool tricks such as basic dolphin kicks and doing full 360 degree turns underwater.

Protect Your Hair!

Spending days basking in saltwater and the sun may be fun, but it can wreak havoc on the health of your hair! Wearing hats don’t exactly scream mermaid, so instead you can avoid sun damage by spritzing on a UV protectant spray. For added measure, coat your locks with a deep-conditioning mask to nourish each strand.

Dye Your Leg Hair Blonde

…This is a very strange, completely optional, but fun step. Dying your hair blond will make your legs gleam in the sunlight even without your mermaid tail on. Coolio.

We all have to deal with very real day to day issues, but this doesn’t mean that we can’t be whimsical every once in a while! Follow these steps the next time you’re in the mood take a break from reality and go with your imagination. Good luck!
